DescriptionThis collection of images were taken in the summer of 1961 by anthropologist, Professor Joel Halpern and later collected in this database by Professor Stephen Jones. The collection presents an eclectic picture of life in the Soviet Republic of Georgia during the Khrushchev era (1956-1964). They were taken as the author traveled from the Greater Caucasus Range south on the Georgian Military Highway into Tbilisi, the capital of the Republic. They present an interesting collection of images of people's lives - including a sheep sacrifice - at a time when few Westerners were permitted independent travel in the USSR. The images cover rural landscapes on the Georgian Military Highway, images of Tbilisi, and of Gori, the birthplace of Josef Stalin.
