Some of the most powerful
and enduring artifacts tracing the early experiences
of the African American slaves are their songs. Called
spirituals and/or the blues, these plaintive songs
are original and uniquely American. Not only does this
music literature reveal the central themes in slave
religion, but it also conveys the social, political,
and historical reflections by African Americans on
their experience. This collection contains many of
these songs. It also contains images related to the
central themes expressed in the songs - freedom, suffering,
human dignity, and an abiding faith. These songs and
images also show the seamless connection the African
American drew between religion and culture.
